cPanel offers built-in tools to help you analyze website traffic statistics, providing a detailed look at how visitors interact with your site. The primary tools for this are AWStats and Webalizer, which process raw server logs and present the data in a user-friendly graphical interface.

Viewing Stats in cPanel

  1. Log in to cPanel: Access your cPanel account.

  2. Navigate to Metrics: Look for the Metrics section on the cPanel homepage.

  3. Select AWStats or Webalizer: Click on either the AWStats or Webalizer icon. You'll see a list of your domains.

  4. View Statistics: Click the View button next to the domain you want to analyze. This will open the detailed statistics report for that domain in a new tab.

AWStats

AWStats (Advanced Web Statistics) is a powerful, open-source tool that analyzes server log files to provide a comprehensive and detailed report on your website's traffic. It's known for its ability to filter out traffic from bots and spiders, giving you a more accurate representation of human visitors.

Key Features:

  • Detailed Metrics: AWStats provides a wealth of information, including unique visitors, number of visits, pages viewed, and total bandwidth used.

  • Geographic Data: It can show you the top countries and IP addresses your visitors are coming from.

  • Traffic Sources: You can see which websites, search engines, and keywords are driving traffic to your site.

  • User Information: Reports on the operating systems, browsers, and devices used by your visitors.

  • Download Analysis: A useful feature that lists the most downloaded files from your site.

How it works:

AWStats processes your web server's log files (like Apache logs), which record every request made to your server. It then aggregates this raw data and presents it in a series of charts, graphs, and tables, making it easy to understand complex traffic patterns. Unlike client-side tools like Google Analytics, which rely on JavaScript, AWStats provides a server-side view of all requests, including those from bots and visitors with JavaScript disabled.

Webalizer

Webalizer is another popular log file analysis tool. While it is generally considered to be simpler and faster than AWStats, its interface is more basic and may not provide as many features.

Key Features:

  • Summary by Month: Webalizer provides a quick overview of your site's traffic on a monthly basis, with details on daily and hourly usage.

  • Traffic Breakdown: It shows a breakdown of hits, files, pages, and visits.

  • Referrers and URLs: You can see the URLs that visitors are coming from and the most popular pages on your site.

  • User Agents: It provides a list of the user agents (browsers and other software) that accessed your site.

How it works:

Similar to AWStats, Webalizer takes your raw server logs and converts them into a series of visual reports. It's an efficient tool for a quick overview of your website's performance and is particularly effective for those who prefer a more straightforward, no-frills approach to traffic analysis.

AWStats and Webalizer are excellent tools for getting a graphical look at your website's traffic logs, with features that let you easily see top IP addresses, popular downloads, and traffic sources, which is valuable for monitoring website performance and security.
